Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Makes: 4 servings
1 small onion, grated
1 large clove garlic, rasped
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 cup (125 mL) panko breadcrumbs
3 tbsp (45 mL) grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp (2 mL) each dried oregano, salt and pepper
1 lb (454 g) ground Ontario turkey
1 cup (250 mL) herb flavoured pasta sauce, divided
4 large fresh basil leaves
4 slices provolone or mozzarella cheese
In a large bowl, stir together onion, garlic and egg. Stir in breadcrumbs, cheese, oregano, salt and pepper. Add turkey and using hands mix together until evenly combined. Divide mixture into 4 and shape into oval patties about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick.
Place burgers on greased or oiled grill over medium heat. Grill about 12 minutes, turning once or until no longer pink inside. Spoon a spoonful of sauce over top of each to cover. Top with basil leaf and lay cheese slice on top; close lid for 1 minute or until melted.
Serve with pasta on the side or on burger buns.
Tip: Shape the patties up to 1 day ahead and refrigerate. Simply grill them up for dinner the next day.
