Rochelle’s Story
What’s on Rochelle’s plate?
It’s hard for Rochelle to choose just one recipe: her family loves turkey! Two of her favourites are her local butcher’s turkey sausage and turkey burgers with red onion, tarragon, and garlic.
Rochelle’s grandfather started turkey farming in Ontario many years ago. Presently, she runs the farm along with help from her dad, Jerome and her children, Keith, John, and Mary. In addition to raising two flocks of 4,100 birds each year, they work on the land growing cash crops.
Rochelle mentions that one of the major challenges to continue family farming lies in the rising costs from generation to generation, but what keeps her involved is caring for the livestock and the satisfaction of putting out a good product.
Producing a good product begins with feeding balanced rations that change every two weeks to accommodate efficient animal growth as well as providing a safe environment for the birds. “Our birds stay inside due to concerns of migratory birds which can carry diseases that could harm the flock,” explains Rochelle.
